Top Trends Leading The Future Of Sustainable Packaging

100% Recycled Packaging

In my previous blog post I shared new and innovative sustainable packaging developments which included mushrooms, wild grass, banana plant fiber and hemp. Pretty exotic and exciting stuff! This is the new normal in packaging.

However let’s take a mountain-top view of packaging’s future directions. What will be the direction of the sustainable packaging industry? And more specifically, what will be the trends and areas of growth which will excite packaging leaders and early adopters?

What’s Next?

Indeed, that is everyone’s burning question. We all wish we had a magic crystal ball, however, leaning on experience from over a decade as a leading innovative sustainable packaging company we have a very exciting view to share with you all. This is our view of what to expect in the coming years. As always, the early adopters will enjoy a wonderful running start over their slower competition.

Top Trends Leading the Future of Sustainable Packaging (in no particular order):

TREND #1: 100% RECYCLED

Manufacturing efficiencies continue to improve for recycled papers and are growing across the packaging landscape. The technology and supply of recycled paperboard, boxboard and paper have dramatically improved in recent years. My fellow Green Packaging Group colleagues such as Globe Guard® and Nashville Wraps are great examples. They have continually added more 100% recycled products year after year. The good news is that even larger companies like Staples and New Leaf Paper have joined the fray. Distant Village also uses only 100% recycled boxboard with every box it produces and even started to produce packaging from reclaimed coffee bean burlap sacks too. The shift toward “recycled” sources has unstoppable momentum. It’s soon to be the norm.

TREND #2: SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE

Over the past few years the focus had been on WHAT is being used for sustainable packaging, the next tier of concern is WHO and HOW eco-friendly packaging is being produced. Furthermore, with Fair Trade products proliferating (such as coffee, sugar, tea, chocolate) along with a focus toward socially-responsible products and business practices comes a movement toward a deeper commitment to social standards. TREND #3: TREE-FREE

Among certain tree huggers, paper from trees can sometimes carry a bad stigma, right or wrong, even if it is FSC or SFI certified. Alternative plant fibers and tree-free papers are becoming more commonplace. An image of tree-free packaging from ディスタント・ヴィレッジ is pictured here. However, caveat emptor. Be on the lookout for “ツリーフリー” packaging products such as FiberStone® or Rock paper which are made with limestone (without trees), but typically include plastic (HDPE), which is probably not what you expected for a treeless paper product.

TREND #4: RECYCLE-COMPATIBLE

If and when we trash our packaging, will it really get recycled? Is the packaging material compatible with existing standard recycling systems? As an example, ピュアラベル™, a label sticker which is natural tree-free paper with 100% recycle compatible adhesives, are an excellent and authentic sticker solution. Whatever paper product PURE Labels are put onto can be totally recycled in standard paper recycling systems. Labels without recycle-compatible adhesives render the rest of the packaging non-compatible with paper recycling systems.

A blog post starting with Ziggy Marley may seem off topic, but no worries, it will be about packaging.

Have you noticed coconut water is much more prominent at supermarkets now? Health claims for coconut water contribute toward driving the momentum of the coconut trend, and it seems there are more and more companies launching new coconut water drinks. A few weeks ago at the 2012 Expo West Natural Products show I was amazed to see so many new coconut (and also hemp) products that have popped up to chase these latest trends. Products such as coconut spreads, coconut palm sugar, hemp granola bars, hemp shakes, hemp protein and hemp oil were all around. Ziggy Marley even launched products for both Coconut (Coco’Mon) and Hemp (Hemp Rules). But what, if anything, does this have to do with packaging?

Large-Scale Supply Of Handmade Packaging

Occasionally, we are asked about our capacity to scale up production of our popular sustainable handmade packaging. It delights us to answer this question. To the surprise of many, our handmade production capacity is 1,000,000 units within just 60 days. You may also ask the next question that others ask, “How is that possible?”

Quality and Reliability Follow a Two-Fold Strategy

As an illustrative example, Distant Village’s handmade production model is a bit similar to that of a large high-quality coffee roaster. How can a large coffee roaster like Starbucks produce so many cups of coffee? (Do they have one hugely massive coffee bean plantation?) We work with a large number of carefully selected artisan communities to develop a consistent high quality line of handmade products using natural fiber materials. As production volume ebbs and flows we extend or retract production across our network. Our local quality control team coordinates and manages our quality standards and production consistency across our producer network. Our advantage is a flexible production capacity in which we are able to produce unprecedented numbers of consistent quality products in a reliable manner with impressive turn-around.

Machine-Made Wild Grass Paper

To further improve speed and capacity, we looked at how to produce machine-made wild grass papers. We have devised a way to shave off weeks of handmade papermaking time by producing large rolls of our exclusive wild grass paper on conventional paper mill machines. We also are producing a variety of many other natural fiber milled papers, such as banana paper, abaca paper, mulberry paper, water hyacinth paper and other paper varietals using invasive plant species and other natural fibers. By machine-producing the paper for our handmade boxes, the time to market for our clients has dramatically improved and opened the doors for Distant Village to work with larger customers with larger volume needs.

I am an optimist. But let’s face it, the economy is rough, and we are not expecting any major changes overnight. That means we need to adjust to this new economic reality. At ディスタント・ヴィレッジ, we have rolled out a new wave of sustainable packaging that also saves everyone money.

We have listened to and responded to our clients’ needs. By reducing packaging costs from 40%-70%, ディスタント・ヴィレッジ offers affordable sustainable packaging for upscale, gourmet and fine boutique products while maintaining strong alignment with premium quality, brand-building packaging. We give the credit for this cost-saving innovation to our customers. Earlier this year, we surveyed a cross section of our clients and asked them about their 2012 packaging needs and goals. We also asked them how we might contribute toward their success. I am pleased to share what we learned.

Water-resistant paper packaging is essential for many situations. Over the years, clients in various industries had requested premium water-resistant paper packaging that is sustainable and eco-friendly. There are various situations where water-resistant packaging is essential — cold/chilled, refrigerated, frozen, wet, powder, bakery and more. Traditional packaging companies have been offering water-resistant packaging for years, but they all missed the mark on sustainable fundamentals.

Necessity Is the Mother of Innovation

So, off to the labs went ディスタント・ヴィレッジ and their skilled artisans. After extensive experiments, research and trials, our latest sustainable innovation is ready for prime time: Water-Resistant Paper Packaging.

Unlike other water-resistant papers, the Distant Village water-resistant packaging is not waxy, shiny or glossy. It looks like and feels like plain ol’ natural paper! The end result is an attractive box or bag that is repulpable, compostable, biodegradeable, recyclable, sustainable and, of course, water-resistant.

One pleased client is entrepreneur Chris Pemberton of Origin Spices, who told us, “We tested the Origin Spices Spice Box made by Distant Village by dumping a pint of water over it and laying it in a pool of water on the counter – it still looks and works fine.” Chris has decided to launch his three new chef product lines (baker’s box, salt box and cook’s box) using the Distant Village Water-Resistant display boxes.

All of our plantable papers bloom with a variety of American wildflower seeds. Producing growable paper, which can also be printable, may be more challenging than many may realize. Seeds must be carefully selected based on size, durability, longevity, blotting and botanical temperament. Only the highest quality seeds are chosen to ensure your papers bloom each and every time. The papers are made from only natural and sustainable fiber blends. The seeds are embedded in the papers (this is a trade secret) in a way that allows them to be preserved and enables our papers to have extremely high flower yield rates.
